A Lizard’s Lark in the Park
Joseph Patrick Rogers

Walter is a bearded dragon
About twelve inches long.
He eats vegetables and mealworms
To keep himself strong.
Strawberry and banana powder
Makes his food nutritious
As well as being quite delicious.

He reflects light
In various ways:
Sometimes green and sometimes grey.
Which one will it be today?
There isn’t any way to say.
But he’ll surely want to play
And travel along his secret ways!

Walter likes so much to explore
That we must watch to make sure
He doesn’t run out the front door!

He’s a mischievous lizard.
That much is sure.
All around the neighborhood,
Walter likes to tour.

He has met his nice neighbors
And made many new friends.
Everyone thinks he’s too wonderful to comprehend!

One day, while seeming to doze outside in the sun,
Walter decided to go for a run.
He ran down the street as fast as could be.
The last anyone saw him was about a quarter to three!

His little head was bobbing with glee.
He knew that he had quite bamboozled me!

It was his best escape yet,
A true masterpiece.
Perhaps he went to see a fairy princess or prince,
Never seen before or since.
Maybe by fairy magic,
This little dragon can fly –
A tiny hero in the bright sky.

About many things,
I often ask “Why?”
Sometimes, too,
I’ll ask “How?”, “When?”, and “Who?”
I wonder whether Walter went to the Zoo?
Perhaps he wanted to see a friend or two.

What his adventure was
Remains a mystery.
Maybe in a magical boat,
He sailed the Seven Seas.

Although Walter loves to wander,
Although he loves to roam,
Whenever his adventures are finished,
He returns to his happy home!
