The Scavenger Hunt
Joseph P. Rogers

“We’re having a scavenger hunt!”
Out went the call.
“It’s open to all –
To the young and the old,
To the short and the tall!”

Everyone was excited
About this momentous event.
Hundreds of emails were
Everywhere sent.

From the Church of the Magdalen,
The teams sped away
As colorful leaves fell
On a cool autumn day.

The searchers went in all directions.
Their modes of transport
Included the most curious selections.

Besides sleek sedans and tie-dyed SUVs,
One group rode a bicycle built for three!
On skateboards and scooters,
They headed down hills,
Not taking even one single spill.

The River des Peres Yacht Club
Waved as their boats sailed by.
A low-flying drone kept
Watch from the sky.

Down Candy Cane Lane
Toward Chippewa Street,
The teams even stopped by Ted Drewes
For a frozen custard treat
And for a clue
That helped solve a riddle or two.

No one walked Route 66;
It was too long a hike.
By the time someone finished on foot,
It would be long past midnight --
Much better to ride in a car
Or on a bike or a trike!

Everyone had to answer questions
Presented online.
Fortunately, just one at a time.

Sherlock Holmes seemed needed to solve some puzzling clues,
But a few were as wise as a muse.

By Google,
By guessing,
By teamwork,
By various means,
The answers to riddles
Were gradually gleaned.

In order to win the prize for first place,
To the finish line,
All the teams needed to make haste!
Everyone raced toward the final destination.
There was no time for procrastination!
The Golden Hoosier restaurant was the
Place for the victory celebration!

Although only one team won,
They all felt like winners
And completed the day
With delicious fish-and-chips dinners!
